COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA (KPTM)- Tom Hanafan took office in 1985. Nearly three decades later he decides to step away. The long-time Council Bluffs mayor outlasted five U.S. Presidents, four of them served two terms.
"It's been a good ride," said Hanafan who said his leadership philosophy never has changed over the years.
"We offer services and the goal was to offer the best services we could afford. That's been the message ever since I started and never changed. So consistency, I think, makes a difference," said Hanafan.
The differences he is most proud of are upgrades to the city.
"I think I'm most proud of our infrastructure system. You know we've separated our storm system, and our sanitary system. The interstate system is being rebuilt. We have a sewer and street program th."t was not here when I started," said Hanafan.
One of the top songs of 1985 was Starship's "We Built This City." Only fitting Hanafan said with a smile.
"It was a good time to come into office. People wanted a change and we really did rebuild the city. It's a different place today."
The top movie of 1985 was "Back To The Future." Hanafan says if he could go back to 1985 and change things along the way, he wouldn't.
"That's something that has been on my mind. You can mark down everything that you've done and ask if you would do it differently. But I don't think there is any one thing that points out to me that we did the wrong way."
Hanafan will remain the Mayor of Council Bluffs until January of 2014.
