Former State Senator Gets Probation for Gambling Away Campaign Money

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA (KPTM)- A former State Senator has been sentenced to probation for a federal wire fraud charge.

Brenda Council pleaded guilty to the charged in September. She gambled away more than $60 thousand in campaign donations at casinos.  Council made the plea in exchange for the lighter sentence. Her law license has been suspended and she will also pay a $500 fine.

Last year Council had to pay a $500 fine for two state misdemeanor counts of filing false campaign finance reports. Last year Council had paid back half of the money she misused. She said she would pay back the rest of the money.

The controversy came at an inconvenient time for Council. She was running for reelection and ended up losing to State Senator Ernie Chambers. Chambers filed the complaint about Council that led to the an investigation by the U.S. Attorney.
