OMAHA (KPTM)- It's the most wonderful time of the year....for car thieves that is. Leaving a running car unattended is a target for would be car thieves.

"We have stolen vehicles every year on a regular basis, but when you leave your vehicle unattended, it definitely promotes a car being stolen," said Laurie Synowiecki, Bellevue Police Department.

The Omaha Police Department reports a handful of stolen cars already due to the cold weather. It expects the usual spike in stolen vehicles that are taken because of leaving then running and unattended this year.

"There are some auto start items that are available that keep cars locked while they are warming up and that's a good way to avoid the problem," said Synowiecki.
