OMAHA (KPTM) – The freezing temperatures and strong wind chills created an unhealthy and unsafe for crews to finish collecting garbage throughout the city.
The City of Omaha's solid waste collection contractor, Deffenbaugh Industries, requires its employees to take frequent breaks to escape the cold and warm up. This safety caution alone results in delays, but combine that with high volume of garbage and leaves to pick up following the Thanksgiving holiday and workers experienced longer hours.
The delays started Thursday. Crews spent Friday finishing the collection areas for Thursday and part of Friday's collection also. They will work through the weekend to catch back up in hopes on being back on track by Monday, December 9.
Omaha Public Works asks people to continue to put their garbage out as they normally would and leave it out until it is collected.
Residents can report missed collection to the city's Solid Waste Hotline at (402) 444-5238 after 7:00 p.m. on their normal collection day. Residents may also sign up for e-mail notifications at www.join.wasteline.org.
