OMAHA (KPTM) - If you want Obamacare coverage by New Year's Day, you have until 11:00 P.M. CST Christmas Eve to sign up.
"We've been getting a lot of inquiries in the last few weeks," said Matthew Leonard, a consumer sales manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska.
Instead of shopping for Christmas presents Monday, callers into Blue Cross Blue Shield went shopping for health care plans suitable for them. It's now crunch time for those who want coverage by January 1st.
"It's better to have something, then be uninsured," said Leonard. "We never know what's going to happen is the principle of insurance, so it's best to get things taken care of as soon as possible."
If you don't have insurance in 2014, that's when penalties will start to kick in. You can expect to lose $95 or one percent of your income. Anyone caught without insurance in 2016 will lose even more - nearly $700 or two and a half percent of your income. That's why navigators are urging everyone to make sure they have their ducks in a row while applying and signing up.
"A lot of it is just being prepared for that information and having all of the proper documents, such as social security numbers for children and tax records to get through the process," said Leonard.
Insurers say it will take you about a half an hour to navigate the entire web site, but it may take you longer to enroll if you have a larger family.
The deadline to sign up before penalties start kicking in is scheduled for March 31st.
