OMAHA (KPTM) - Christmas Eve in the Midwest and almost everybody has a place to go this holiday season, but traveler beware if you're heading out to visit loved ones.

"Weather conditions change quite frequently, so it's better to be prepared," said Jason Campbell, a floor manager for Ace Hardware.

Shelves at places like Ace are now stocked with supplies to help travelers get out of any urgent situation.  From flashlights to cell phone chargers to kitty litter for car tires, Campbell urges anyone without an emergency kit this Winter to get one.

"Travel safety is important this time of year."

Anyone heading to the north or east for the holidays will have to heed Campbell's warning for sure.  That's because a winter storm recently dumped several inches of snow on roads from Des Moines to Milwaukee.

"If you're not prepared for it, that's when the bad stuff happens," warned Frank Wingert, a visitor to Omaha from Sioux City who has an emergency kit ready to go in his car.

Travel experts also recommend that you check the weather forecast before going anywhere.  That way you can plan an alternate route if need be.
