OMAHA (KPTM)- They are as much of a tradition as decorating the Christmas tree. But leftovers could be hazardous to your health.
Some simple rules can keep your food save, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
"Make sure that you don't leave them sitting out longer than two hours," said Julie Schwartz, Registered Dietician.
Whether that's the turkey or a casserole, get it into the refrigerator quickly.
"Put your food in an airtight container because air fuels the bacteria. You want to keep the air out," added Schwartz.
The temperature of your refrigerator should be below 40 degrees to make sure the food will stay safe. You may want to get a thermometer if your refrigerator does not already have one.
Salads are a different story.
"Mayonnaise based salads like egg salad, potato salad, and macaroni salad has a seven day shelf life, but anything Italian vinaigrette based has a ten day shelf life," said Chuck Russell, Deli Manager for Wohlner's Grocery Store in Aksarben Village.
"You should eat leftovers within three to four days, but remember, if in doubt, throw it out, is a nice motto," added Schwartz,
