OMAHA (kptm) - Hundreds of people came out Sunday to support an Omaha police officer that was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Just over 5 months ago, Jeff Kozeny was told he had a cancerous brain tumor.  "It's been very hard, it changed our whole life."

A 12-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department, he's spent his career helping others.  But now, they are helping him, showing him support during a difficult time and giving him donations to help pay for the mounting hospital bills.  "You realize after something like this happens that there's so many people that know you and that have known you for a long time that you haven't seen that come up and support you and your family, it's great stuff," Kozeny said.

Surrounded by loved ones after two surgeries, a sight his parents said is a reminder of the kind of friends their son has made over the years.  "I was always impressed with their friends.  If they had good friends, they'd be good kids.  What's this tell you?  My kid's got a lot of friends.  He's just a good kid…says it all," Mike Kozeny said.

"It's been exciting seeing a lot of people I haven't seen in a while.  This turn out's been great like a big family all of these police officers, so seeing a lot of old family and friends, people I haven't seen in a while it's really nice."

Encouraging support, Kozeny said, will help over the next few months.  "About a month from now I'll be starting radiation."

Another challenge Kozeny said he's meeting head on while continuing to stay positive.  "If you can act positive and think positive and when you have friends and family to help you out it makes everything so much easier when you're loved and you have people to love it just makes everything a lot easier."

If you missed Sunday's benefit and would like to help the Kozeny family on this challenging journey, you can donate to their fund at the Omaha Police credit union.
